Online assessments have been broken for a long time
For decades, companies hired engineers by asking them to solve puzzles in a vacuum. The idea was to check the ability to convert thought into code – the primary competency for developers! Restrictive. But about the best companies could do.
That model was always a poor proxy for real work. Now, it's openly broken. LeetCode stars mean nothing today. Cluely broke every single online assessment platform.
The result – hiring teams can't trust what they see. Hiring has become a daunting exercise that produces uncertain signals on both sides.
We need a new class of Assessment Platforms
Think about how pilots get evaluated before flying a real plane. They go into a flight simulator — full cockpit, real conditions, real decisions.
The world needs a new class of assessment platforms. One that creates potentially infinite environments that, with high fidelity, reflect our current technological problems for candidates to show their skills in. They must then become active observers, not judgement zones, helping identify signals outlining the strengths and concerns with respect to work requirements.
What Utkrusht is building – and why
Utkrusht was born from this conviction. Assessments must bring signals for what actually matters at work.
Not what a candidate can recall under artificial pressure. Not their performance in environments that don't resemble the job. Not their ability to defeat proctoring software.
What matters at work is judgment. Approach. The quality of thought under realistic conditions, working across various systems and tools, making decisions.
